MARK YOUR CALENDAR for Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 4:30 pm. Celebrate the ARTS with Union Symphony Society, Inc. at the Charmber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of the Symphony’s new Downtown Monroe Location, 211 N. Main Street, Suite C-1 (the old Woolworth Building). Light refreshments will be served and music will be provided by several members of the Symphony Orchestra in the “Loft”. This event will kick off the 2008-9 Membership Drive and exciting events for the new season will be announced.

The Union Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with Wingate University Singers will present Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 7:30 in the Batte Center of the Hannah Covington McGee Theatre, on the Wingate University Campus. Tickets will be $15 general admission and $10 Seniors and Students. Please call 704-219-3936 for more information.
The Union Symphony Society is holding the second annual Youth Concerto Competition for high school age students residing in Union County or students of Union County instructors on April 12, 2008, in the Wingate University Recital Hall. Both of these projects are supported by the Union County Community Arts Council and the Grassroots Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency.

Union Symphony is sponsoring a unique competition that is open to all area individuals and Groups. The competition is being held at 2:00p.m. on Sunday, March 2 at the Central Academy of Technology and Arts , located at 600 Brewer Drive in Monroe. Individuals or groups will perform their own rendition of the famous hymn, Amazing Grace. The adult prize categories are choirs, small groups, instrumentalists and soloists. There are prizes in the same categories for Youth as well. Call 704-219-3936 to sign up or get more information.

The next Union Symphony Concert, Hooray for Hollywood, will be at 7:30 on Saturday, January 19 at Central Academy of Technology and Arts on Brewer Drive in Monroe. Director, Dr. Kenney Potter has a wonderful program planned featuring works of Hans Zimmer and John Williams including music from Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter symphonic suites, as well as Blue Danube waltzes and the Chicago and Carmen suites. General Admission $15.00 and $10.00 for Seniors. Free admission for children under 12 and, for this concert only, all other students also get in free.

First Presbyterian Church of Monroe will present the Union Symphony Orchestra and Chorus directed by Lee Northcutt and featuring pianists Drs. John & Jean Roberts. This concert is free and the public is invited to hear three Brahms works, Concerto in D Minor for two pianos by Francis Poulene and Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. Come early for the 3:00 concert on Sunday, April 29 at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, 302 Windsor St.

Union Symphony Society and Union County Community Arts Council present Dr. Kenney Potter conducting the Union Symphony Orchestra and the Wingate University Singers performing beautiful works of the Baroque Masters. Saturday, April 21 you can experience the Bach Contata from the Brandenberg Concerto, Dvorak’s New World Symphony , some Handel and Vivaldi’s Spring from Four Seasons in the beautiful and historic Siler Presbyterian Church in Wesley Chapel. Union Symphony Society held a Youth Instrumentalists ConcertoCompetition on Saturday, April 14at 2:00 pm in Wingate University Recital Hall.
High School age Union County musicians competed for certificates, family season tickets and cash awards underwritten by the Law Offices of William K. Goldfarb. The winner, trumpet player Ben Fuller will also be featured in October in the first concert of the Union Symphony2007-2008 season. Runner -up was Dianna Searle on the clarinet and Tergel Pigg got Honorable Mention. (Pictures: 1. Jill Goldfarb and Nola McCollum watch as Dr. Potter congradulates Ben. 2.
