Motorcycle Poker Run to Benefit Red Cross

Red’s Bar & Boogie and WIXE Radio are holding a Motorcycle Poker Run on Saturday, March 31st at Red’s Bar & Boogie, located at 1000 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC, 28110. The run will be held to raise funds for the family of the late American Red Cross volunteer Fred Clark and the American Red Cross of Union County’s Heroes Campaign.

On February 14th the American Red Cross lost one of their beloved volunteers, Fred Clark. Fred was always willing to help no matter the circumstance, and in 2001 was awarded the prestigious Governor’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service in Union County. Some of his volunteer accomplishments include helping to secure supplies during an ice storm, raising funds to purchase disaster trailers, cooking at a fundraiser, or being a Hero for the American Red Cross. He also volunteered with many non-profit organizations in Union County, his church, and anyone in need.

The American Red Cross Heroes Campaign runs from March 5-23rd and consists of individuals or organizations pledging to raise a minimum of $1000 for the Red Cross within that time period. They can raise the money by any means they choose, and WIXE has chosen to raise their funds by holding the Motorcycle Poker Run.

“We chose this event because we have a lot of riders in the area and they love it,” explains Shane Greene, program director for WIXE. “Plus, Red from Red’s Bar and Boogie knows everyone, so there will be a crowd.”

The Motorcycle Poker Run is like a big game of poker, where motorcyclists go on an 80-100 mile ride with five stops along the way, and at each stop they get the opportunity to draw one card. At the last stop whoever has the best hand wins the poker game. There will be awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and whoever comes in last will receive a trophy. Registration begins at 11am and the cost is $25 per entry, which includes the chance to play 3 hands and a BBQ dinner at Red’s Bar & Boogie. The game will run from 12pm – 5pm, with stops at Red’s Bar & Boogie, Skinnyz in Matthews, NC, Marcy’s Place in Monroe, NC, Thank You Now in Pageland, SC, and ending at Red’s Bar & Boogie.

An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
